Tbilisi Architecture Guide by Angela Wheeler
I ordered mine, this looks like a great addition to any Tbilisi shelf (or handbag)
This new Tbilisi Architecture Guide has just come out, by Angela Wheeler, with photos by Vladimir Shioshvili. Angela and Vova are good acquaintances and friends, so I am obviously positively disposed, and they are also people who have contributed to Tbilisi / Georgia community efforts in various ways.
Often you walk past buildings, and you know a bit but not that much, as with the Justice House.
This guide solves that, giving useful background. I did not know the “Mushroom Building” cost $61m, which to me still seems money entirely well invested, for a symbol of engaging with citizens in a more open, accessible way, right in the city. (The building also houses most of the offices of the National Bank of Georgia, top left we are looking at its Director’s office, and on the opposite side is much of the Ministry of Economy.)
The above is a post by Angela, via Facebook, to show how book adds to the existing literature (including the great Tbilisi Architecture Map).
And here also a glimpse into the book, again via the authors which makes me regret I never checked out the spiral garage.
One recognizes various names among the authors who have contributed, and great to see that Giorgi Babunashvili, a former colleague and true expert on issues of urban mobility and transport infrastructure, is also contributing.
The book is published by DOM publisher in Germany, 480 pages, 700 images, at €48, which given its heft seems like a fair price and good investment. Congratulations to all authors!
Here is the link to the book at the publisher’s, and here you can pre-order at Waterstone’s. When it will become available in Tbilisi, I will share. (Usual disclaimer: no referral, etc, and I ordered my own copy just yesterday.)
